The first rule of Boston weather: no rules! A chilly, overcast morning can become a sunny, warm afternoon—and vice versa. Try to layer your clothing so that you can remove or add garments as needed for comfort. Rain may appear with little warning, so pack a raincoat and umbrella if you have the room. Boston is a great walking city—despite picturesque but bumpy cobblestone streets, brick walkways, and uneven asphalt—so be sure to bring comfortable shoes. In all seasons, it's often breezier (and colder) along the coast; carry a windbreaker, fleece jacket, or sweatshirt or hoodie when touring the beach or harbor areas.
